Volcanoes Trail

08/21/2020

The Volcanoes Trail is located within the borders of the Petroglyph National Monument. This trail is known by some as the "Three Sisters". It is a well-maintained trail that mostly consists of sand but there are a few rocky spots on the trail. This is a loop trail and there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the beautiful views! Don't let the lack of trees or wildlife sway you from enjoying this spot. There is plenty to see and explore! You can find lizards running right through the trails, watch carefully they are very fast you may miss them. While on the top of the volcanos you can look for fulgurites on some of the boulders surrounding the summit craters. Fulgurites in this area are dark green to black glossy marks around a centimeter in diameter made by lightning strikes. There have been many lightning strikes on these peaks since they are the highest feature on the west mesa.
